“If you can speak you can influence. If you can influence, you can change lives”
It was my great pleasure to head up the Public Speaking Club for 2015. It was a year filled with spectacular speeches and brave deliveries. Through the continuous guidance and unwavering support of Mrs Leeburn, our members not only learn the art of creating and delivering effective speeches, but also fine tuning verbal and nonverbal skills, developing critical thinking skills and ultimately, conquering the fear of speaking in public (glossophobia).
This year’s annual Speech Finals competition saw all of the above perfectly put into practice. The deserved winner of the junior section was Danilo Perone and the senior section was hotly contested, with Tshepo Motaung walking away with the honours!
2015 saw a record number of Grade 8s participating in all levels of Public speaking, as well as 3 teams of Matric Public Speakers competing at the highest level. It was the first year St Benedict’s was invited to participate in the prestigious Nedbank Trophy Challenge.
Once again our public speakers excelled in the Inter-School Presentation competition, a true testament to St Benedict’s commitment and talent.
For the third year, the Beste Spreker competition also took place, setting such a high standard that it has become an activity from which to earn points towards Oratory Colours.
I would personally like to thank my English Teachers and Mentors, Mrs Oosthuysen and Mrs Nichas for assisting me and guiding me through the year. The team would like to thank the entire English Department and in particular Mrs Leeburn for her tireless and selfless hard work in always ensuring our boys are perfectly prepared and never failing to point out when they are not!
Best wishes for the 2016 Captain/
