St Benedict’s squash club is a small club that occurs after school in the winter season. Despite the limited numbers, the squash club is filled with excited and enthusiastic players varying in ability from provincial level to beginner.
Being a small club in the St Benedict’s set up makes the clubs focus one of competiveness but with an emphasis on learning and enjoyment. For the junior players we offer practices once a week and a match once a week for the players good enough to make the side. The teams travel around Johannesburg playing schools of similar strength, not only making the matches closely contested but allowing the kids to make friends with children from a variety of schools.
For the seniors one practice is also offered along with one match a week, however with our first side being in the Super League (the top school boys’ league in Johannesburg) the practice includes a strong focus on bettering the players through individual coaching. Like the juniors the seniors travel around Johannesburg playing many of the top boys’ schools, allowing for friendly rivalries and closely contested matches between those individuals who may play provincial squash together.
The boys practice at Jeppe Quandom Squash Club and transport is made available for all practices and matches from school. The courts are in great condition and with 4 being available it provides the boys a huge opportunity to grow within the sport.
The members of staff involved in the squash set up is quite limited due to the size of the club, but with the expertise of Craig Norris, who ran the club for many years, and myself, the newly appointed MIC of Squash, behind the boys they have a great chance to grow and develop as players. We hope with the growing numbers in squash at the school we can in the next few years create an environment that gives all players involved coaching and match experience, something that will benefit the sport as well as benefit them.
