Basketball at St Benedict’s was introduced in 1997 when the facilities we are current using were established by the then Headmaster Tony Dobson and a group of parents who had helped to donate funds to improve the school sports infrastructure.
After the courts had been established, the school promoted the game by engaging with other schools who were already offering Basketball - St John’s, King Edwards, Pretoria Boys and the like. These initial plans prove successful as we were able to build long-standing, sustainable relationships with all of South Africa's top Basketball-playing schools. Today, Basketball at St Benedict's has grown into one of the school's strongest and most popular sports.
In 2000, Basketball became an official sport at St Benedict’s College, when the first ever competitive Basketball schools league in Gauteng was launched. Since then, St Benedict's has consistently achieved enviable results and has produced many provincial and national athletes. In 2004, our school senior team made its first appearance at the National Finals against a school that had proved to be the powerhouse of basketball in the country - Durban High school. A second loss at the National Finals in 2006 was followed by successive victories in 2007 and 2008.
There are currently 12 teams in the college from u14 to senior level, all teams compete in Boys’ Basketball League which is made up of Boy’s Schools from in and around Johannesburg. The u16A team competes in two festival in the season, namely the American International School of Johannesburg; where we were runners up in 2015 and 2016 as well as the St John’s u16 Tournament. The first team takes part at the Kearsney College to begin the season in the 3rd Team and then participates in the u18 St John’s Festival during Mid-Term break of the 1st term.
