Basketball at St Benedict’s was introduced in 1997 when the facilities we are current using were established by the then Headmaster Tony Dobson and a group of parents who had helped to donate funds to improve the school sports infrastructure.
After the courts had been established, the school promoted the game by engaging with other schools who were already offering Basketball - St John’s, King Edwards, Pretoria Boys and the like. These initial plans prove successful as we were able to build long-standing, sustainable relationships with all of South Africa's top Basketball-playing schools. Today, Basketball at St Benedict's has grown into one of the school's strongest and most popular sports.
In 2000, Basketball became an official sport at St Benedict’s College, when the first ever competitive Basketball schools league in Gauteng was launched. Since then, St Benedict's has consistently achieved enviable results and has produced many provincial and national athletes. In 2004, our school senior team made its first appearance at the National Finals against a school that had proved to be the powerhouse of basketball in the country - Durban High school. A second loss at the National Finals in 2006 was followed by successive victories in 2007 and 2008.
Just over one hundred boys are selected to play Basketball at College level - sufficient to provide two teams per age group per division. When overall enrolment in a year permits it, up to three teams per age group are accommodated.
