St Benedict’s cricket has certainly grown since the first game of cricket was played at St Benedict’s way back in 1962. St Benedict’s played against Maryvale Altar Boys and narrowly lost. Father Jimmy Towell was the first cricket coach at St Benedicts during the sixties and he later became Headmaster in 1969-1970. The College currently boasts 16 cricket teams (four per age group). Our Preparatory school has three teams per age group and four teams in the open age group whilst mini cricket is offered in the Elementary School.

St Benedict’s has over the last few years, benefited from the experienced coaching staff with recent cricket professionals and ex- provincial first class cricketers putting the boys through their paces.

The facilities match those of all the top schools in the country: four fields with turf wickets. Turf practice nets are also available for use during practices and integrated days. St Benedict’s also owns Ravens Park in Linbro Park that has an additional three cricket fields with turf wickets which the Preparatory School utilises.

The College 1st team emerged  as the winners of the John Waite B section in 2007. Andrew Hipkiss was the College’s first double centurion scoring 200 runs not out vs Potchefstroom Boys in 2007. Nicolas Smit was the first provincial cricketer selected for the Gauteng U13 A side in 2006 and followed this up by being selected for the Gauteng U15 A side in 2008. St Benedict’s Prep and College cricketers play under the East Area banner and compete in the Gauteng School Trials.

In October 2006, St Benedict’s joined the Gauteng Boys schools fixtures schedule and now play against all the top cricketing schools in Gauteng. This includes participation in the Independent Schools Cricket Festivals as well as in the John Waite competition. The cricket boys also enjoy the opportunity of playing schools from around the country when they go on their annual tours.

In 2010, a state of the art indoor cricket centre was opened. The cricket centre boasts seven cricket nets with 18 metre run ups and excellent lighting. The boys are exposed to the latest coaching techniques needed in the modern  game.
