The winter season in South Africa brings about two of the biggest sports focused on by schools. In order to compete with the top Boys' Schools in South Africa a huge focus was needed on our winter sports. This came about for hockey at St Benedict's College in 2006 when St Benedict's invested in an artificial Astro turf that would allow our boys to train at the level that they wished to compete at.
Since the introduction of the Astro, St Benedict's College has become a powerhouse in the hockey standings. We regularly place first across all age-groups in the Easterns’ league, and compete at all levels in the Southerns’ School’s league. We are able to field four hockey sides per age group (U14 through to U18), allowing us depth in each team.
This has proved valuable in our results over the years. We reached the finals of the prestigious Aitken Hockey tournament in 2010, as well as having won the U/15 Boden Hockey tournament in 2008. Our teams have also competed in various festivals throughout the years, including the Easter Festival hosted by King Edward VII School where we get to be tested by some of the best hockey schools from around the country. Over the past 5 years, we have had 6 boys selected for the South African Junior teams.
There is a passionate group of Hockey staff at St Benedict's that have played and/or coached at various levels of hockey and work hard on developing the skills of the boys to ensure that the level of hockey is continuously bettering itself at the College. Our main focus however is encouraging the boys to enjoy themselves, whether they are competing at First team level or at the lower school levels.
With the energy and determination from both the boys and the coaches, our goal is to keep progressing and strengthening while still holding up the ethos of the sport. All of this, along with fitness and dedication shall bring us closer to the number one spot on the SA Schools' Hockey Table.
A massive congratulations needs to go out to the St Benedict’s U16A hockey team, as they finished in the Number One spot at the prestigious Top Eight festival held at Parktown Boys’. The team beat Jeppe High School for Boys in the final to take home the trophy. Congratulations to Claudio da Silva for being awarded the top goal scorer of the tournament.
Another trophy was collected, when our Mighty 2nd Team went unbeaten at the Inter-Catholic Hockey tournament held at Randburg Astro on Saturday 21st May. The 2nds, captained by Thabang Mnisi, won 3 and drew 1 game, scoring 6 goals in total and not conceding any. This is the third consecutive year that our 2nd team has been victorious in this tournament. Congratulations to the coach and players.
Good luck to all for the remaining fixtures.
