St Benedict's rowing started in the 1987/1988 rowing season to provide a summer sporting activity for boys who had not made their mark in Cricket, Tennis or Swimming in the Prep School - and who were subsequently being left out of the mainstream of the sporting life of the College. In this we were most successful. Boys' who were "not sportingly inclined" were suddenly stars! And it was not long before rowing began to play an important role at the College.
St Benedict's rowing is very strong. Despite the competition between a large number of South Africa's top Boys' Schools, Bennies has remained the champion rowing school since 1994 - having won the Championship Trophy at the South African Schools Rowing Championships, as well as at the Gauteng Schools Championships, every year since 1994! A St.Benedict's crew won the Championship First Eights event at the South African Schools Championships for the first time in 1999 and then again in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. St.Andrew's, Grahamstown, won the event in 2004, 2005, and 2006. St Benedict's won again in 2007 and 2008 and again in 2011, when we came first in every age group! While St Benedict's takes its rowing very seriously, the accent remains on fun and enjoyment. Besides the two rowing camps each year, as many excursions as possible are organised for different groups of rowers: to Cape Town, Port Alfred, East London, Knysna, Natal, Zimbabwe - and even in the past to the UK and the USA.
