Vincent does Bennies Proud at Harvard
The Harvard heavyweight crew opened the 2013 spring season with a 20 second victory over Cornell. Vincent matriculated from St Benedict’s in 2011 and was the first freshman ever to make the Harvard 1st VIII, after a recent NCAA rule0change allowed 1st years to compete at Varsity level. Vincent hopes to return to South Africa in June to trial for the U23 pair that will compete at the U23 World Rowing Championships. Vincent won a Silver medal at the 2012 World Rowing championships that were held in Lithuania.
Vincent Breet (class of 2012) participated in the U23 World Rowing Championships, in the men's pair event. The championships were held in Trakai, Lithuania last weekend. Vincent and his team mate, David Hunt, came second overall achieving the silver medal. Congratulations!
The St Benedict’s College First Four that won gold at the South African Schools Rowing Championships in March this year have been selected to represent South Africa at the World Junior Rowing Championships in August this year. The championships will be held in Hamburg Germany. First VIII Rowing coach Brad Smith has also been selected as the coach of the crew. The crew members are: Sebastian Raven, Andrea Giammartini, Justin Bruce, Garth Holden and Riccardo Busato. Congratulations to the boys and coach and we wish them all the best in their preparation for the championships.
At the end of the 2013/2014 rowing season Mrs De Reuck indicated that she would like to focus on her professional development as well as the possibility of starting a family. She felt it was the right time to start putting a succession plan in place should she step down. With that in mind, Mr Roff was drafted in as Mrs De Reuck's able assistant for the 2014/2015 season. With new opportunities that have presented themselves at the beginning of this year, Mrs De Reuck has asked to step down from her duties as Master In Charge of Rowing.
We thank Mrs De Reuck for her time and commitment to the Rowing Club. The success that the club has achieved over the past few years can be attributed to her passion, foresight and enthusiasm. We wish her well in her new role as Grade 8 Year Head.
It is with great excitement that we hereby appoint Mr Roff as Master In Charge of Rowing with immediate effect. Mr Roff has all the credentials to fill the void that Mrs De Reuck has left and I have no doubt that he will continue to maintain the high standards that were set by his predecessor. We wish Mr Roff and all the rowers everything of the best moving forward.
Dylan Trollope (far right of picture) and his crew are currently rowing in the Senior World Championships in Aiguebelette, France. The crew qualified to row in the A-final at the championships by placing third in their heat. This performance has allowed the crew to qualify for the 2016 Para-Olympics in Rio. Congratulations to Dylan and his crew, we wish them everything of the best for the Final!
