Over the course of 2015/2016 St Benedict’s water polo has had an uphill struggle. Yet even more so the season can be considered successful. The under 14s towards the end of 2015 were invited to the u14 Rondebosch tournament giving the players an opportunity to experience the level of waterpolo of the stronger schools in South Africa – this now, along with guidance, has given the current under 15 age group a strong end to the season placing 12th at the 2016 Parktown Indigo tournament where the under 15s narrowly lost against coastal schools including Rondebosch and Westville. These results are promising; showing the potential these players have come the 2016/2017 season.
The current under 14s (2016 season) featured in the KEN Short under 15 tournament (hosted by Jeppe) where the level of competition seemed to be a bit overwhelming for the newer waterpolo players – this tournament does give a platform for the under 14s to perform well the third term under 14 Rondebosch tournament.
The St Benedict’s under 16A side are one of the top in South Africa with a win rate of 80% against top Johannesburg schools. Overall the 2016 under 16 age group continuously improves and will be the stand out team come their matric year in 2018.
The 1st team featured in their first tour going through to the Grey Bloem ITEC under 19 tournament where they placed tied 11th drawing to the host school in their last game.
Memorable moments of the 2015/2016 season:
• Under 14A with a win over Pretoria Boys High School.
• Under 15A beating DHS 11-0 at the 2016 Parktown Indigo tournament.
• Under 16A with a win over Pretoria Boys High School in their second Pretoria Boys fixture after losing their first.
• 1st team beating Crawford at the Grey Bloem ITEC under 19 tournament.
• Rivalry between St David’s.
It is also great to see that some of our B teams, 2nds and 3rds have recorded victories against our traditional rivals. This indicates that we are starting to develop depth in strength.
Many of our players were selected to represent Eastern Gauteng Schools Waterpolo during December 2015, at the South African Schools Waterpolo Championships held in Cape Town. 8 players were selected for the Eastern Gauteng squads with 2 selected for the Central Gauteng sides.
Congratulations to all our waterpolo players, whose efforts and commitment have brought about these wonderful results. Thanks to all the parents, whose support has been invaluable. The coaches, our unsung heroes, whose efforts go largely unnoticed and whose input and commitment has been amazing. Thank you!
