Rowing 2012

Captain 2012: Devon Breet                                    MiC: Mr T Flude

Coach's Report

As we enter Term one I am pleased to carry on the rowing in Preparatory School with the Grade 7 boys. Rowing is not only a physical sport; it is also a sport that requires commitment and dedication to the training schedules and to the remainder of the team. St Benedict's rowing club has been consecutive winners of South African Championships for the past 19 years and with the dedication and commitment from the coaches and rowers this coming Championship will be our 20th win.

Rowing is not only a sport that requires team work and strength, it also helps the boys learn some core values to life through their training. Each and every boy becomes part of a bigger family when they join the rowing club because they are all one in the same no matter wheather they row in the E team or th A team. It has always been the rowing clubs philosophy to allow every boy the equal chance to make the crew he deserves to be in and that every single boy will take part in regatta's and training camps through the season.

Our Gr 7 boys make up the U13 age group and I have the privilage to teach them from the beginning all the basics and technique to this new sport offered from Grade 6. Every boy starts at the same level and progress's at his own pace through the U13 season and we use their U13 season to elimanate bad habits and bad technique by showing them the correct technique early.

I look forward to working and conditioning all the Preparatory rowing boys and Good Luck to the Rowing club for the remainder of the season 2011/2012.

Yours in Rowing
Travis Flude

Please note that from August the boys will be moving on to the Under 14 age group where they will have preference on boats and training as they won’t be the lower learning age group anymore.

As a Grade 7 rower the intention is to learn the technique of rowing and have fun doing so. We try not forcing the boys to worry about crew selections and heavy training as this has a negative reaction when the boys want to take rowing through to the High School.

We are privileged to have 25 grade 7 rowers this season and I look forward to training with the boys and being able to teach the dedication, commitment and how to look after their bodies for years to come.

As a grade 7 rower your son will learn all the basic skills and technique in rowing allowing them to all progress at the same level. As they progress they will soon adapt at their own pace along with the coaches conditioning their technique allowing them all to become the best rower they can be.
