Rugby is held in the beginning of the second term and is played in a 10-man format. The u/9 boys will play 10-man format with no scrums or lineouts. u/10 boys will play 10-man format with uncontested scrums and lineouts. The U11A & B teams will play 15 – man format with uncontested scrums but contested lineouts. The rest of the u/11 teams play 10-man format with uncontested scrums and line outs. The Open A & B and u/12A & B will play 15-man format with contested scrums and lineouts. Rest of the boys will play 10-man format.
Different rules are implemented in different age groups for safety reasons. Full inter-school fixtures take place allowing every boy the opportunity to play competitive matches against similarly skilled opponents. Any boy from U9 to Open may play rugby.
The objective is not just to win, but rather to foster a love for the game and to equip boys with the necessary skills to enjoy this ultimate team sport.

All teams must arrive in their full school tracksuit 45 minutes before the start of their game.
All boys from Grade 3 – 7 must wear any rugby shorts and any rugby jersey to their practices.

It is very important for all Grade 3 - 7 boys who wish to play for the school rugby teams to attend each and every trial or practice session to qualify for team selection. If a boy cannot attend a practice or trial session due to medical conditions or any reason whatsoever a proper note signed by his parents must be handed in to Mr. Wessels.
The U/9 & U/10 rugby teams will be divided as follows; U/9 mixed ability teams, U/10 mixed ability teams. These teams will follow the 10-A-side rugby format where they play over a quarter of a rugby field. Scrums and line-outs will be uncontested. The U/11A & B age group will play the normal 15-A-side rugby format over a full rugby field. The U/11 mixed teams will follow the 10-A-side rugby format but with contested line-outs.
The U/12A & B & U/13A & B age groups will be separated as per the Independent School sporting structures. These teams will play 15-a –Side format with contested scrums and line-outs. The rest of the u/12 & u/13 boys will play 10-a –side format in mixed ability teams.
All boys from Grade 3 – 7 who will be participating in Rugby must always wear a gum guard to all practices and matches.
All rugby boys from Grade 3 – 7 will not be allowed to practice, play around prior to their practice as careless injuries may occur. Rugby boys will only be allowed onto the training field to start their rugby training upon arrival of their rugby coaches.
It will be compulsory for all boys who will be playing rugby to attend all afternoon training sessions. Register will be taken by the coaches at each and every afternoon practices session. Boys who do not attend weekly afternoon practice sessions will not be eligible for team selection and match participation..
All boys from grade 3 – 7 will participate in either rugby or Tennis during the Integrated day sports sessions. All boys will be encouraged to participate in the pre-season rugby training during the Integrated day sessions. Rugby will be the main sporting code for this period.
Rugby Dress codes for practices and matches; U/9 – U/13: St Benedict’s rugby kit, Long royal blue and red striped rugby jersey and royal blue rugby shorts. It is also strongly recommended for boys to wear a gum guard when participating in rugby activities.
