MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY HEADMASTER

Manners Maketh Man

Over the last few years, but especially over the course of this last season, we, as staff have become acutely aware of a worrying trend in our boys’ interactions with other schools, other people, referees and adults from our own school and other schools.

When I started here in 2006 I was amazed by the way boys carried themselves; they would greet every person and no matter how many times you passed the same boy he would stand up and greet... Well that has certainly changed.  Manners seem to be like fashion, they seem to have gone out of style.

Some of our boys show no  respect; for example when walking in the corridors they don't greet others., Why? Because they are too focused on their phones playing FORTNITE or checking something on instagram or Boomeranging something.  They do not greet one another or acknowledge teachers or any adult who might be on the campus. Boys do not shake the opposition’s hand before or after a game, and for some unexplained reason the boys feel they are entitled to abuse referees and question their decisions. I am flabbergasted to see school boys abuse a referee or question his or her decision. How is that acceptable? We as a school will not tolerate this going forward.

This is one of the reasons we focus on manners and etiquette at almost every assembly or meeting we have. I would encourage you to click on the link.

Although the video clip refers to football,  it can be used as a metaphor for every situation that you might find yourself in. For those who are not familiar with Football, the quarterback he is the executive director of a movie or play. The Quarterback in  is the most important member of the team as he is the one who  controls the game play and every player. The Quarterback from Stanford has made a difference, ONE MAN! Admittedly,  you might not change every one, but if you can show respect to one person and change his or her mindset then you have done your job.

So I challenge our boys, let's be better people, let's greet others, let's say please and thank you, let's shake a hand to appreciate the effort of a friend or foe.  It's not going to make you less of a man...in fact you will most certainly earn more respect.

BE A GOOD MAN

REFLECTION

 I can only imagine

I have journeyed this year with a group of matric boys through my weekly RE lessons. Inevitably our lessons would end with a short discussion on God’s presence in our lives. We would share our stories and me, being an avid movie goer, would share lessons learnt from one or other movie that I have watched...read more

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) for 2019 - Grade 7, 8 and 9 Parents

A reminder to that next year the Grade 8, 9 and 10 boys will need to bring a device to school to be able to integrate technology into their lessons. St Benedict's has chosen to implement Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) where boys may choose to bring any device (including a laptop) that can run Google products.  As a minimum, boys will need to be able to install the following Google Products on their device:
Gmail
Drive
Chrome
Calendar
Docs
Sheets
Slides
Classroom
Annotation tool such as Kami or PDF to make notes
Attached are two letters that have been sent to parents on 6 June 2018 and 18 September 2018.

6 June                    18 September

A number of parents have indicated that they wish to purchase the Google Chromebook but are hesitant to purchase a product they have not interacted with physically. We will have a number of school-owned Google Chromebooks available for parents to "test drive" in the Senior Computer Laboratory on Thursday, 27 September 2019 from 15:00 to 17:00. Please email Mrs Kench at kenchd@stbenedicts.co.za to confirm your attendance.

FROM THE SPORTS DESK

Congratulations to Jonty Adams, and Sebastian Petrich on their Team Blazers for Athletics.

GOLF

Golf Championships

The second round of the School Golf Championships was played this weekend at Royal Johannesburg West Course.

Unlike the first round, conditions were perfect. The weather was not too hot, a gentle breeze and beautiful greens.

Ross Morley-Jepson took a two shot lead into the second round but could not hold onto it. Double bogeys on 10, 11 and 12 put paid to his challenge and he ended with an 82.

Bailey Hirsch shot a near perfect front nine of 37 with only one dropped shot and then did enough on the back nine to finish with a very credible 77. The final placings were Ross Morley-Jepson in 3rd, Troy Kyle in 2nd and Bailey Hirsch in 1st. Well done!

Some of the other less experienced players also found the conditions easier than the first round and generally scoring was better.

Thanks to all the boys who participated and we look forward to seeing you all next year.

Our relay teams made a clean sweep winning all the age group relay events. Well done to all athletes!

BOARDING HOUSE TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT

On Thursday night the annual Bishop Grandin House Table Tennis Championships took place. Earlier rounds had taken place with all boys from the house playing round robins in their pools.

It all came down to four boys. Tshepo Phogole was too good for Uchena Azih in the first semi-final whilst TK Muradzikwa proved to be too strong for Thuto Mogotsi.
Mogotsi was the playoff for third and fourth whilst in the final Tshepo managed to beat TK in a very close match, eventually winning 3-2. The final placings were Thuto Mogotsi 3rd, TK Muradzikwa 2nd and Tshepo Phogole 1st for the second year in a row. Much fun was had by all the boys. Such fun to be a boarder!!

CRICKET

Mr Kubeka handed over cricket equipment that was collected from our Bennies boys and parents to the Daduza Hub head coach Petros Mofokeng. It's great to see our community helping those in need. A little goes a long way. We call on all boys and parents to please bring any old sporting/cricket equipment They don't use anymore so that we can keep giving to boys in need.

CRICKET COACHING

Parents can also sign their son up for individual private cricket coaching by completing the on-line application form.

The on-line form can be found by going onto the College home page; and then click onto the PAYMENTS tab, which will automatically bring up the application booking form.

Please feel free to contact Mr David Lincoln (Head of Sports) for any further information and assistance.

NEWS SUBMISSION FORM

Many great St Benedict’s stories go untold and uncelebrated because it is inconvenient and time-consuming for boys, staff and parents to sit down and put pen to paper. In order to make it as easy as possible for you to submit an article, our Marketing Department has created a News Submission Form that makes the process really quick and easy. We invite our boys, staff, parents and alumni to submit your latest news of school events, achievements and awards using the form. The Marketing Department will review your submission and forward it to the relevant forum for publication, be it the press, our weekly newsletters, our Facebook page and other social media platforms or Clamour, our online magazine. Please click here to find the news submission form.
