St Benedict’s College, an independent boys’ school in the east of Johannesburg, is proud to host the second annual Ephraim Mohlakane U14 Basketball Tournament from 19–21 September 2026, building on the success of the inaugural event held in 2025.
This year’s tournament will bring together 24 teams from 21 schools across South Africa, with U14 and U18 fixtures taking place throughout the weekend. Supported by more than 40 referees, the event is expected to welcome over 1 200 people to campus each day, creating an exciting atmosphere of competition, school spirit and community.
Held on St Benedict’s world-class basketball courts, the tournament brings together young athletes, coaches, families and supporters for a weekend that celebrates the growth of basketball and the development of young people through sport.

Celebrating a Legacy
The tournament honours the legacy of Mr Ephraim Mohlakane, whose passion for sport and longstanding commitment to the St Benedict’s community continue to inspire this event.
His belief in sport as a vehicle for discipline, opportunity and personal growth is reflected in the tournament’s vision: to provide young players with the opportunity to compete, develop their skills and build relationships through sport.
Building on a Successful Beginning
The inaugural tournament in 2025 brought together 13 leading boys’ schools from across Southern Africa. After three days of highly competitive basketball, Saheti were crowned champions, with Maritzburg College finishing as runners-up.
The success of the first tournament established a strong foundation for what is set to become a significant annual event on the school sporting calendar.
In 2026, the tournament grows substantially, with participation expanding to 21 schools and the introduction of U18 fixtures alongside the U14 competition. This broader programme creates an even greater platform for young basketball talent while strengthening connections between schools from across the country.
