The Niche Programme

Boys have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a special interest for a double period in a ten day cycle. The niche activities are facilitated by staff who have a passion in that particular area, and boys are free to choose from 20 niches in the College. These range from motor mechanics, to woodwork and Masterchef.

Sport At St Benedict’s College

The importance of participation in school sport is highly regarded at St Benedict’s College. We believe that our boys receive a richer education thanks to their involvement in the school’s sporting programme. Our belief of ‘a healthy mind in a healthy body’ has seen a move to complementing top academic facilities and academic endeavour with top sporting facilities, along with excellent coaching structures. Sport at St Benedict’s continues to make great strides and our competitive presence is felt across various sporting codes, at festivals and fixtures against schools across the country.

Cultural activities
at St Benedict’s College

Cultural activities at St Benedict’s are varied and rich and encourage the development of well-rounded young men. We support the development of talent and give boys the space to express themselves artistically. Boys are encouraged to participate in public speaking, debating, drama, pipe band, chess and music.

A variety of cultural activities

Public speaking and debating develop boys’ confidence and their ability to express their ideas on a range of important topics of social interest. Boys participate in Model UN Debating and the South African Guild of Public Speaking.

Musically, boys are able to choose to learn to play a variety of instruments, including piano, cello, violin, flute, drums and saxophone. In addition to individual music lessons, boys are able to participate in the marimba band, ensembles, a rock band and choir. Our music facilities are excellent and cater for individual practicing requirements. Boys participate in eisteddfods and external examinations through The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College London.

St Benedict’s has been leading the way in offering bagpipes and highland drumming as matric music instruments, working closely with the Scottish Qualifications Authority in curriculum development and implementation. Our pipe band has participated at the South African Championships and the Champion of Champions competitions.

A variety of music extra lessons are offered at Bennies.

The Drama Department encourages boys to write and produce their own plays. Plays are workshopped and staged annually in preparation for the internal One Act Play Festival, FEDA and the bi-annual major production staged in collaboration with our sister schools.
